Thanks to Christine Jackson for forwarding her letters:

dscf1281.jpgThis is a National Disaster/Disgrace
This is what is happening to our Short and Long neck Turtles.

Ministers Penny Wong, Peter Garrett and Karlene Maywald,

What are you doing?
Our river system is a national disaster.
Please don’t let the Lower Lakes and Coorong die.
These are our Australian Lakes and Coorong.
Your actions and the governments' actions are so UNAUSTRALIAN.
You should take care of us; we are all Australians.
You and your governments take care of people and disasters outside of Australia much better than you are taking care of the Lower Lakes and Coorong.
What do you think putting a weir at Wellington will do?
It will not fix the problem; you are just putting off the big problem and the big decision-making?
It may not happen this year or next year or even the year after but one thing you can be very sure of is that the death of the River Murray will continue to happen.
It will continue to die from the weir up and then lock 1 and so on.

Minister Peter Garrett,

I am absolutely disgusted in your absence re our environment.
If you think the water problem and the drought conditions are not affecting our environment you are kidding yourself.
When you were appointed to be Environment Minister we thought how great it would be for our environment. All my friends and I supported you when you were singing protest songs and President of the Australian Conservation Council and we now need you to support us.
Many years ago you visited the Lower Lakes and Coorong concerned about it, but I never thought that you would abandon it when you became minister.
The leaders of your party have silenced you.
You surely cannot be happy with your role as Environment Minister.  You had more to say and do about the environment before you became minister.
I cannot believe what little you have done and said about our environment.  Instead of wondering outside our country lets see what you can do in our Australian country first.
The children of Australia need you now.
Lets fix our problems first.

Yours sincerely
Christine Jackson

Goolwa Sunday 10th August

I was going to talk about weird people and weird schemes that plan to build channels through our lakes and completely destroy Mother Nature’s reason for creating the Lakes and Coorong.

I was going to talk about our leaders who think it is a waste of fresh water covering our acid sulphate soils because the water will evaporate.

I was going to talk about the Mouth closure in April 1981 and how it spurred hungry, greedy governments to increase water extraction by three times, but I will leave that to the historians.

It is more important to tell you that I will never stop fighting to keep our environment strong and healthy.

I will never stop trying to retain its fresh water character that has supported fish, birds and plants for thousands of years.

I will never stop fighting for these fresh water lakes that are the life and soul of the Coorong.

Nobody on earth has the right to kill our Lakes and Coorong.

Nobody has the right to cause some of our unique species to become extinct.
