Mission

The River, Lakes and Coorong Action Group Inc. is an independent, community-based organization.  It was formed to

  • improve all aspects of the River Murray, Lakes and Coorong and to prevent any further degradation;
  • increase the water flows in the River, Lakes and Coorong by lobbying governments and users of the River system;
  • liaise with appropriate bodies over the management of the River Murray, Lakes Alexandrina and Albert and the Coorong, and their immediate surrounds;
  • protect, conserve and enhance the biodiversity of the River, Lakes and Coorong.

A Little History

The River, Lakes and Coorong Action Group Inc. came into being after a meeting at the Milang Pub, January 4, 2007. A number of people living in Clayton, Finniss, Langhorne Creek, Milang, Point Sturt and Strathalbyn were frustrated because we felt there had been no real consultation about the proposal to build a weir at Wellington. After the announcement on Melbourne Cup Day, 2006, at the Prime Minister’s Water Summit, we had had visits from politicians and promises about consultation, but little solid information. So Henry Jones and Anne Hartnett called a meeting and it took about an hour for those present to decide we needed an Action Group.

We formed sub-committees and began a whirlwind of activity to hone our message, get the word out, liaise with other groups. We did not want to take the place of existing committees and we were eager to learn what had already been achieved at Meningie and Langhorne Creek.

Our actions have included organising symposia, rallies, petitioning government,  letter writing, talking to interested groups and hosting visits from interested parties. [See Events ].

In 2007, we ran a very successful campaign against the proposal to build a weir across the River Murray below Wellington.  The Pomanda Island weir is yet to be built and we will continue our campaign to make sure it stays that way.

In late 2008, news that more weirs were being contemplated began circulating in our community. We have tried to get accurate information but are told we will be consulted when appropriate. We do not call that consultation.  So we have launched a new campaign, “The Summer We Saved the Lakes” and we invite you all to participate.

The River, Lakes and Coorong Action Group is open to any new members from the district and has now grown to include members from Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island.

The RLCAG also operates an information based web site here
